Housebill 264 would create an open enrollment for the Firemen's and Rescue Squad Worker's Pension Fund. Our office has sent out a survey requesting information from each squad/service and we have heard from several of you concerning this matter. A problem that concerns me is the lack of participation by Rescue & EMS personnel. There is an old saying about not looking a gift horse in the mouth.....just take it, it's a gift! We have the opportunity to pay 10 bucks a month for 20 years into a State supported pension program. Folks, that's $2,400 total. At age 55 you can retire and begin drawing $141.00 per month, for life. In 17 months you will have your money back. This is just one of the benefits of being in this business. But first, YOU have to take advantage of it. There is another old saying about leading a horse to water, but you can't make him drink!! I really can't understand why our people do not take advantage of this program. I know, I know, I wasn't going to be here 20 years either, but I've been around for 25 years so far and plan to stay some more, if the Lord is willing. I am also a member of the Pension Fund.
Please let us know your feelings about this issue so that we can know what to do. I hope you will support this effort. If you have concerns, please let the office know. Thanks for all you do for so many citizens of this great state.
The date is here. If you have not submitted your application for the scholarship program, you have missed the deadline. Think about it. You or your child could have received one of the benefits that the State Association has provided for you. If you have a child that will graduate next year (1999), you might want to start now and obtain information about the scholarship program. Make sure you attend your squad meetings so that you can obtain information about the scholarship program and other benefits that the Association has to offer.
