The Rescue Standards Committee is moving along quite well. They have met on two different occasions and have started to put the pieces together so that we get a completed puzzle. The reason for the standards is that more and more people are calling themselves a "rescue provider" without having the background, training, knowledge, skills, abilities or equipment to perform rescue duties. Simple possession of a hydraulic tool does not qualify one as a rescue provider. This has caused significant problems in certain areas of the state and needs to be corrected. I, along with many others in North Carolina, feel that minimum standards will help ease the burden being placed on some organizations. It will also set the standard for those who have a desire to perform rescue type work by letting them know what is expected of them. We are looking for a completed standard by the end of the year. Hopefully, we can meet this goal.
Convention 98' is just around the corner and you should be prepared. If you need rooms, the host hotel, Adam's Mark, has about 25 rooms left. These are King rooms with one bed. It will be kind of rough if several people are planning on sharing a room, but it beats sleeping in a car. Both Friday and Saturday will be full of events, so come early and be prepared for an exciting time. OEMS and DOI have done much to make our Convention a better event and we appreciate their continued support. Be sure to check with your squad chief and be sure your registration is taken care of before convention. It will speed up the process so much. If you wait until the day of Convention, expect reasonable delays. See you in Winston-Salem.
