The Board of Directors held their first meeting of the year at Mount Olive Rescue Squad. The facilities were excellent, the food was outstanding and we accomplished much. I can't thank them enough for the way they cared for us while we were there.
Several weeks ago, you received information about hospitals not being able to exchange supplies with squads anymore. I think this info was a little misleading and now many organizations are having to purchase supplies that previously were simply exchanged. A new interpretation has been issued and, in fact, it is lawful for local hospitals to exchange supplies with squads and services in their local area. As long as there are no stipulations attached to the exchange that require you to bring patients to a certain hospital in return for those supplies, it is entirely legal for a hospital to provide them. The first ruling failed to take in consideration many issues including local agreements relating to the re-stocking of supplies. I know some of you have been hurt by this financially. I hope that you can regain what you've lost or at least re-negotiate some type of arrangement for those lost supplies. You might want to keep in mind that only one provider can charge for supplies used on any one patient. That is, if the hospital gives you a cervical collar for one you used and they charge the patient for it through Medicare/Medicaid, then you cannot issue a charge for the same item. If you need additional information, check with our Goldsboro office or the NCOEMS Web page.
