COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

Standards of Service, Standards of Performance, Professional Standards, etc., we all live and work by standards. Over the last several months various members have discussed, with me, problems in which they mention a need for standards. Several have mentioned the need to begin a system of minimum standards for those who perform rescue work. I am fully aware that rescue service is being provided across this state in many different forms, following many different ideas and theories, by many different groups, some of which don't even qualify as a rescue service. Some are not concerned with certifications, some are not concerned with sufficient staffing or equipment, some just want to be there and be seen; all in the name of "rescue". There was a time when no one, except a few dedicated persons, wanted to do rescue work. Now everyone wants to get into the act....without following any symbol of order. I think the time has come for a very close look at Standards. Standards that would require minimum performance by an organization that wants to perform "rescue work". I have called together a meeting of the most knowledgeable and experienced "rescue providers" in this State to look into this matter. Along with representatives of various government agencies, we will take a look at this idea to determine if we should go this route or look to other areas to stabilize rescue services in North Carolina. You will be hearing more about this idea in the near future.

If you have ideas or concerns, please contact me or the Association office to express your views. We can always use your input to better Rescue & EMS in North Carolina.

Don't forget the Brotherhood. Let's help those who have gone on before us. Thanks for all you do for so many.

VICE-COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a dinner in honor of a member of the Newton-Conover Rescue Squad. Alvin Stallings was a charter member joining the squad in 1955. He served as chief of the squad for 27 years. As members of his community were speaking of his work with the squad over the past years, I wondered if we will have many of our present members to surpass this record. Think of the many hours that he has devoted to helping his neighbors, the many hours that he spent training so that he could help his neighbors and the time that he was away from his family. Alvin Stallings, there is not many people like you left. Thank you for time in helping your neighbor.
