Implementation of a new Rescue Standard is moving right along, thanks to the many people who helped develop and write the details. We continue to be open for comments and input from the public and welcome the opportunity to continually improve our standards. Thanks to all of you who have supported this idea by saying, "what took you so long". Our belief is that if you say you are a rescue squad or you advertise that you are a rescue squad, or you profess that you can perform rescue work, then here is the standard that separates those who can from those who can't. Ideally, it will enhance and raise the standard of performance of all rescue providers throughout North Carolina.
There may be some persons out there who feel no need to set standards, to follow in a proven path or to even train beyond a minimum level of proficiency. To those, I issue a challenge. Enter a team in our upcoming Rescue Challenge or Heavy Rescue Competition being held in Winston-Salem in September 1999. Test your skills and abilities against some of the best teams, not only in North Carolina, but the Nation. We'll even tell you what the problem is going to be so there will be no surprises. If you think you got what it takes, enter a team and compete. If you're not quite sure enough, come and watch. I know a couple of teams who can show you how.
Again, I thank you for all you do for so many in need. Please, remember the Brotherhood.
The Benevolent Brotherhood is a fund that provides immediate financial aid to the survivors of deceased members. You as leaders of your squad need to bring to the attention of your members the benefit of belonging to the Brotherhood. We have over 16,000 members in the Association, but just over 5,000 belong to the Brotherhood. Less than one-third of our membership. Each squad should work out a program to pay for the members assessment. This would be a way of retaining members in your squad along with the other benefits that are provided by being a member of the Association.
