    COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

The scholarships that the Association awards each year are out and the winners have been notified. Each year it appears that the students are improving in their overall application and the SAT scores are getting higher. You, as a member of the Association, should be proud that over $480,000.00 in scholarships were awarded to children of eligible parents who are in rescue and EMS and to eligible members of the Association. It is a good feeling to talk with or receive a letter from a student who has received one of the scholarships. It would have been extremely hard for some of the students to further their education without the scholarship. But, would you believe that we still had some students that would have been eligible, but someone in the squad/department left the name of their parent off the roster. To the winners, CONGRATULATIONS, and please review the guidelines that you received when you were notified that you had received a scholarship. To those applicants that did not receive a scholarship this time, your name will remain on file with the Association and in case one of the winners this year does not follow the guidelines and should lose their scholarship, you could receive the remaining portion of that scholarship.

    VICE-COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

Well, we have had two weekends of Rescue College and the training, as always, was great. A big "THANKS" goes to the staff of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Fire and Rescue Services Division. These men and women do an excellent job of coordinating and instructing not only these two weekends, but throughout the year. We also owe a "thank you" to the Durham Fire Department for the use of their facilities.

The scholarships have been awarded and we wish everyone who applied could receive one, but that is not financially possible. If you or your child applied and did not get one this year, all is not lost. All names are put on a prioritized list and if from some reason a student has to quit college, the scholarship is passed down to the next person on the list. Keep up the great work. The citizens you help appreciate it more than you are told.
