Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of us!
COMMANDER'S MESSAGE
Paperwork, paperwork, it's everywhere. Like the saying goes, "Nothing is done until the paperwork is complete". If you are a squad Captain or Chief, then you have a responsibility to get the paperwork done, whether you are there or not. The ambulance call reports, the rescue call reports, the incident reports, the list could go on and on, but a big one this time of year is ROSTERS. A notice was sent out in October, another in November and the final is coming to your postal address soon. If you have not filed your roster by December 31st, your department will lose benefits. It does not matter if you delegate this job to your squad secretary or whomever, it ultimately is your responsibility. You were elected or appointed to do the job, so do not fall behind. File your correct roster. If some member does not have their thirty-six hours of training, then do not sign for them to remain on the state pension fund roster or the Association roster. We wish you a Happy Holiday Season.
VICE-COMMANDER'S MESSAGE
"Hello" to all rescue members. I hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful weather we have had in North Carolina. We have been blessed with an almost perfect Fall and lots of falling leaves.
Two months ago, we experienced one of the worst disasters ever. I am referring to the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Again, tragedy has struck with yet another plane crash in New York. Let us take time to send prayers and condolences to all the families and friends of every human involved. The tragic events have given rise to the question: "What would we do if we had a similar situation in our state". "Are we TRAINED and QUALIFIED to handle a situation where buildings and thousands of lives are lost and devastating injuries occur"?
CERTIFICATION and QUALIFICATION are two very important words that come to mind when I think of the above. Many members of our group are having trouble with the new guidelines that have been given to us and the time table for completion of the guidelines. There are a lot of members looking for the easy way to become certified. There is no easy way! Training schedules need to be incorporated in each squad for classroom training, along with skills practice. No matter what level of certification you choose, you need to be focused and be the best you can be. The choice is yours. The communities we serve need to know that we have the knowledge and skills needed to serve their needs. I am pleased with the number of highly trained, qualified rescue and EMS personnel we have in our great state. We have two agencies that assist in training our members in a professional manner, the State Fire Marshals Office and the Office of Emergency Medical Services. The instructors work very close with our members to be sure they know the needed skills before testing. We cannot go back to the time when all you had to do was attend a class and receive a certificate. We must continue to have hands-on-training to keep up with the ever expanding technology and streamlined methods of care we are to administer to our communities. They say "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". I'm learning that old dogs can learn and function as good as the young dogs. I challenge all of you to stand, be counted, and meet the new challenges that are before us. Over the years, we have made the necessary changes in our training needs and required qualifications. We can be proud of what we have accomplished. Let's keep going. Questions and responses are welcomed.
I would like to wish you and yours a very warm, joyful, and safe Holiday Season.
