COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

The benefits that the Association has for its members are excellent and if a squad/department utilized them as a recruitment tool to obtain new members then they are most important. One of the benefits that we have is the scholarship program. Over the past three years it has been my pleasure to serve on the committee that awards the scholarships to individual students who meet the guidelines. The Association office receives letters from students who are graduating letting us know how much the scholarship assisted them in completing their education. It is a very special feeling to read some of the "thank you" letters that we receive and knowing that without the scholarship, it would have been difficult for the student to attend college. Each member of the Association can be proud of the scholarship program.

VICE-COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

With about four months until the Convention if you or your squad have never entered any of the competition, either rescue or BLS, this year would be a good time to start. At the very least, the squad members who train for competition will be better on the actual call. This year the site is Hickory and if you have not yet made your reservations, don't wait too late. The host squads are planning on making this a great time for all who attend. For more information, visit the web site at www.rescue2001.com. This site has a lot of information such as hotel listings, the convention schedule of events, special events, convention center information, contact information, local links, vendor information, restaurants, special prize information, event deadlines, event forms and current weather conditions in Hickory. Click to see what Hickory has to offer.

Another reminder.....June 30, 2001 is the deadline for making payment for those who applied to purchase prior years of service in the Pension Fund.

NATIONAL EMS MEMORIAL SERVICE

"The Ultimate Sacrifice"

Thirty-one volunteer and career rescue squad members from ten states, who died while on duty, were recognized at the National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Memorial Service on May 26, 2001 in Roanoke, Virginia.

They served as EMS providers with rescue squads, fire departments, Med-evac services and ambulance services. All died in recent years while on duty, assisting sick or injured persons. Some 750 EMS providers and family members from across the nation attended the eighth annual national event.

Since the Memorial Service was established in 1993, 195 providers have been honored. The Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads founded the Memorial Service.

"The names of those honored are engraved on individual brass leaves that become part of the 'Tree of Life,' a permanent memorial to EMS personnel who died in the line of duty," according to Memorial Service Chairman Kevin L. Dillard. "A picture and brief biography will be placed in the National EMS Memorial Book. The service and permanent memorial are the only ones of their kind dedicated solely to EMS personnel."

The "Tree of Life" is a special display at "To the Rescue", the national EMS exhibit in Roanoke. It highlights the history of EMS and the lifesaving tools, technology and training used by today's volunteer and career EMS personnel.

During the service, family members and/or colleagues received an American flag that has flown over the U.S. Capitol and recognizes the EMS provider's community service, a single white rose signifying love of others and a medallion representing their eternal memory.
