Rules and Directions for Participation in the Scholarship Awards Program for Members

The North Carolina Association of Rescue and Emergency Medical Services, Inc. will award each year, thirty (30) $4,000.00 Scholarships to thirty (30) members of the N.C. Association of Rescue &EMS, Inc. These awards will be paid to the student in installments of $500.00 per semester. These awards will be made to those members who will enroll in a four (4) year college or university in North Carolina, beginning in the Fall, after the scholarship is awarded. This scholarship may be awarded for a total of four (4) years.

In addition, the N. C. Association of Rescue and EMS will award each year thirty (30) $2,000.00 scholarships to thirty (30) members of the N.C. Association of Rescue & EMS, Inc. who will enter a two (2) year course of study at a community college, technical institute, or an accredited trade school in the fall after the scholarship is awarded. Awards will be paid to the student in installments of $500.00 per semester. This scholarship may be awarded for a total of two (2) years.

Each eligible member may apply for exactly one scholarship in any given year. Please do not submit multiple applications!

The following criteria should be submitted with each application

  1. It is critical that applicant provide a valid e-mail address with their application, as correspondence related to the application will be sent by e-mail.
  2. A listing of church, community and civic activities
  3. A listing of honors, awards, special recognitions
  4. A list of work experience
  5. Financial need such as medical expenses, care of additional family members, etc.
  6. Financial resources you may be receiving or are going to receive such as social security, scholarships, loans, etc.

Awards shall be based upon the member's scholastic achievement, intellectual ability, financial need, character, and promise of future contribution to our State and Nation. Selection of recipients is to be made without discrimination as to race, sex, creed or national origin.

After entering school, a recipient must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average and carry three (3) credit hours or more each semester. To receive payments recipient must furnish a transcript or grade report of the previous semester, Fall grades by February 10th, Spring grades by July 10th. Failure to do so will result in the loss of scholarship. Exempted schedules will forfeit scholarship if transcript or grade report is not filed within sixty (60) days of last class. Please allow 2-4 weeks for payment processing.

Continuation of the payments of educational benefits for members shall be conditioned on the continuance of active membership with an eligible department.

Applications are available on-line January 1st and will remain through March 31.

Applicants must apply, on-line, by March 31st. Please read rules for eligibility.

All recipients will be posted on the web page by May 15th of each year. It is important, when checking the web-site, that you search under the year that you applied for a scholarship. All scholarship winners will be listed by the application year, not the year that the scholarship was awarded.

Rescue Squad Workers' Relief Fund

General Statute Chapter 58, Article 88, section 5 (G.S. 58-88-5)

(4a) The purpose of this fund is to pay additional benefits approved by the Board Trustees of the fund to Rescue & EMS Workers who are eligible pursuant to G. S. 58-88-10 and who are members of the Association.

Administrative Rules

  1. Scholarship Awards. The state shall be divided into fifteen (15) areas. Fifteen (15) scholarships in the amount of $4,000.00 each and fifteen (15) scholarships in the amount of $2,000.00 each, shall be made. Each area shall be entitled to one (1) $4,000.00 scholarship and one (1) $2,000.00 scholarship. The executive committee at its discretion, may award up to fifteen (15) $4,000.00 scholarships and up to fifteen (15) $2,000.00 scholarships per year.
  2. Applications and rules will be on our web-site on January 1st and will remain through March 31st.
  3. Applications must be submitted no later than March 31st.
  4. Applicants are restricted to association members of eligible departments.
  5. Applicants must attend college in the fall of the year they apply for the scholarship.
  6. Applicants must provide evidence that they will be admitted to an accredited institution of higher education.
  7. The $4,000.00 scholarship may be used only for attending a four year college or university in North Carolina.
  8. The $2,000.00 scholarship may be used only for attending a community college or trade or technical school in North Carolina.

This Awards Program provides $180,000.00 per year in scholarships to members of eligible rescue squads and EMS services.
